The Special Meaning Behind BTS's "Red Devil" Outfits at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

 


On July 19 (local time), BTS performed at the halftime show of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final at New York New Jersey Stadium in New Jersey, United States. For this special stage, the group performed their 2020 global hit "Dynamite," a song that conveys a message about cherishing life and embracing positive energy.

Commanding the center of the stadium, the members cleverly modified part of the lyrics to fit the football theme, creating a one-of-a-kind performance exclusively for the World Cup Final. Immediately, after the show ended, major media outlets, including Billboard, published glowing reviews, praising BTS for having "lit up the halftime show with an energetic and dynamic performance."




Following the performance, BTS's stage outfits also became one of the hottest topics acros social media. The harmonious combination of red, black, and white, along with a fashion aesthetic inspired by football jersey and racing attire, blended seamlessly with the festive atmosphere of the World Cup. However, the most eye-catching element was undoubtedly the prominent "Red Devils" motif associated with the South Korean national football team. 




"Red Devils" is the nickname most closely associated with the South Korean national football team. It is also the name of the team's official supporters' club, which was established in 1995 and officially adopted the name in 1997. At major international tournaments—most notably the 2002 FIFA World Cup—the Red Devils united millions of South Koreans, who flooded the streets chanting "대한민국 (Daehanminguk // Republic of Korea)" in perfect unison, demonstrating unmatched passion and national pride.

Although the South Korean national team was eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup during the group stage, BTS symbolically brought the Red Devils spirit to the tournament's biggest stage. One Korean fan remarked, "South Korea's football team didn't make it to the World Cup final, but the Korean Red Devils were carried all the way there, proudly engraved on BTS's chests." Interestingly, after last night's final, V also shared an Instagram story with the caption, "Even so, I'm with the Red Devils," expressing his continued support for and unwavering faith in the South Korean national football team.




More importantly, BTS's incorporation of the Red Devils symbol into their 2026 FIFA World Cup outfits also represents an act of cultural reclamation. Historically, the color red in South Korea was, for a period of time, associated with war, violence, and North Korean Communism. However, the nation's unprecedented success at the 2002 FIFA World Cup completely transformed that perception, turning the "Red Devils" into  vibrant symbol of unity and modern Korean identity.

Beyond that, the Red Devils emblem also carries many positive meanings in the world of sports. Red symbolizes passion, vitality, and powerful energy. According to traditional beliefs, it represents fire, drives away evil spirits, and brings good fortune. Meanwhile, the Red Devils mascot is inspired by Chiwoo Cheonwang (the Chiwoo Heavenly King), a legendary figure revered as a god of war and a powerful guardian believed to bring victory in battle.

BTS's performance outfits were designed by Cai Jie, a fashion designer who graduated from the London College of Fashion (LCF) and the Royal College of Art (RCA). Through his label, Cai Jie has established a distinctive aesthetic that embraces freedom, experimentation, rebellion, and individually. In addition to the "Red Devils" motif, the outfit patches also featured "Arirang" and the number "7"—two elements closely tied to BTS's identity—creating a meaningful connection between Korean national spirit, football culture, and the group's global journey.




BTS's remarkable appeal extends far beyond their music; it also lies in their ability to convey profound messages through the language of fashion. It comes as no surprise that immediately after the performance, social media was flooded with praise for the group's striking World Cup looks:
