World-class groups BTS and Blackpink are coming... The K-Pop market is expected to thrive next year

 Dec 31st, 2024

The K-pop market is expected to be extraordinary next year. As the group BTS and Blackpink prepare for their full group activities, fans anticipation is rising. The return of these globally top-tier groups is drawing attention to how many reshape the K-pop market.

BTS will begin preparations for their full group activities after completing their military service. The five members currently serving in the military, RM, Suga, V, Jimin and Jungkook are expected to be discharged or exempt from service in June next year. The eldest members, Jin, and J-Hope are focusing on individual activities after completing their military service this year.

After their discharge, it is expected that the members will reunite in some form. Some speculate about a world tour in 2026 or an album to commemorating the 10th anniversary of "ํ™”์–‘์—ฐํ™” (Hwa-yang-yeon-hwa)," through there's also a possibility it might extend into 2026. Initially, to reward the long wait by their fans, Kwon as ARMY, they are expected to kick off full-group activities with content like live broadcasts.

BTS temporarily paused their group activities after releasing their anthology album "Proof," which encapsulated their work up to 2022, and holding the concert "Yet To Come in Busan." Following this, the members expanded their own musical worlds through solo activities.

Jimin wrote a new history of being the first K-Pop solo artist to top the Billboard 200 and sold more than 1 copies in the first week of its release. J-Hope was the first K-Pop singer to perform a solo as headliner (signboard performer) of Lollapalooza, a large American music festival.

The members filled the gap during their military service with an album they had prepared in advance. Jungkook enjoyed global popularity with his solo single "Seven," while RM's documentary film "RM: Right People, Wrong Place," which covers the making of his solo album, was released in 90 countries  worldwide.

They also stood out in the fashion industry by taking on roles as ambassadors or models for global luxury brands, with BTS showcasing their presence through solo activities, it is anticipated that their impact will be substantial when they return as a full group. International music media have selected the members' solo albums as the "Best Album Of The Year," raising expectations for their group activities.

The members also have a strong will towards group activities. Having re-signed with their agency, Big Bit Music last September, they hope to continued group activities after completing their military service in 2025. Jimin expressed on the fan community platform Weverse after winning the daesang at the 2024 MAMA Awards last month. "What kind of songs should we present after our discharge, and about it," and added, "We will show an even better version of ourselves after growing much more, so please look forward to it."

Blackpink has already confirmed their full-group activities for next year. Blackpink renewed their contract with YG Entertainment solely for group activities and decided to pursue their individual projects on their own. The four members have made a name for themselves both domestically and internationally, leveraging their recognition and influence.

Excluding Jisoo, who is currently active as an actress, Jennie, Lisa, and Rosรฉ have emerged as solo artists. Rosรฉ created a global sensation with her duet "Apt." with pop star Bruno Mars. "Apt." reached 8th place on the Billboard Hot 100 and 2nd place on the UK Official Singles Chart, which are considered the two main charts worldwide.

Upon release, "Apt." topped all three major music platform — YouTube Music, Spotify, and Apple Music — as domestic music charts like MelOn, Genie, and Bugs. It also claimed the top spot on the Billboard Global Chart (Excl. the U.S.) as of the chart dated September 29. Jennie's solo song "Mantra" reached 98th place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in October.

Lisa's "Rockstar," released in June, hit 70th place on the Hot 100, and in August, she released the single "New Woman," a collaboration with pop star Rosalia, which peaked at 97th on the Hot 100. In September, Lisa also received the "Best K-Pop" award at the renowned American Music Awards, the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

Blackpink will reunite next year to meet their global fans. They are set to release a new album and embark on a world tour. Yang Hyunsuk, CEO of YG Entertainment, officially announced on the 2nd, "2025 will be a year of significant events for YG," stating, "Blackpink's comeback and world tour will begin."

There is high anticipation not only in the music industry but also in the stock market for the full-group activities of BTS and Blackpink.

Lim Soojin, a researcher at Daishin Securities, stated, "Next year, we expect growth in album sales due to the full-group comebacks of BTS and Blackpink, recovery of fandom competition sentiment, and the timing of monetizing low-tier IPs (intellectual properties)." She projected that "With the growth in performance next year, a favorable stock price trend will continue."

She added, "As of last year, the album sales of BTS and Blackpink together accounted for 14% of the total domestic album market, and the expected attendance for the world tour is anticipated to exceed the combined planned attendance of all artists under their agency, indicating significant growth." She also noted, "The combineed YouTube subscribers count for both groups is 170, suggesting an increased interest not only in their comeback albums but also K-Pop as a whole."
