One of the most anticipated news in 2025 is that BTS's military service period is coming to an end. Currently, five members who are serving will complete their mandatory military duty in June consecutively. However, opinions are divided on whether full group activities will resume immediately afterward.
Currently, Jin and J-Hope are the members of BTS who have completed their military service. Jin, who was enlisted first, finished his military service as an active duty soldier on June 12, 2024, and J-Hope was discharged from the military on October 17, 2024. Since his discharge, Jin has been actively participating on various activities, including releasing a solo album titled "Happy" and appearing on various entertainment programs, J-Hope is also making appearances, having thrown the first pitch at the 2024 KBO Korean Series and filming for MBC's "1 Live Alone."
The other five members will either be discharged from the military or be called off in June. RM and V will be discharged together on June 10, 2025, while Jimin and Jungkook who enlisted together, will be discharged on June 11. Suga, who is serving as a social service worker, will be released from the military on June 21.
BTS's last group album is "Proof," and anthology album released in June 2022. After that, the members focused on solo activities. Jimin and Jungkook, both achieved number one in the Billboard Hot 100 with their songs "Like Crazy" and "Seven," respectively, while Suga reached number 2. On Billboard 200. J-Hope became the first K-Pop artist to headline the major U.S. music festival, Lollapalooza.
In particular, they filled their hiatus by gradually releasing pre-produced albums and contents. Although all members were once in military service, this strategy minimised their break. It is not lost their brand power even during their break, while make a tremendous impact upon returning as a complete group.
The members of BTS signed up a new contract with Big Hit once in September 2023. If the members complete their military service by June, there will be no significant restrictions on group activities. However, the controversy surrounding Suga's drunk driving that occured during the military hiatus has bit been fully resolved. Suga was caught riding an electric scooter while intoxicated in September 2024, during his time as a social service worker.
Suga received a summary order with a fine as a legal penalty. However, suspicions have been raised that the incident was downplayed in the process of reporting the drunk driving news. The issue of drunk driving itself is already a significant problem, and the explanations and apologies that followed led to even greater disappointment. As a result, the fandom has become divided between those supporting the group's full comeback and those demanding Suga's departure. Given the on-going unclear conclusion do the situation, a hasty return could be detrimental.
Despite the controversy, the members have shown a strong desire return to their full-group activities. After winning the award at the 2024 MAMA Awards, Jimin posted a message in the fan community, saying, "I've been excitedly thinking about what song to show you after my military service, and what kind of performance to show you. I'll grow up even more and show you a better image, so please look forward to it."
HYBE, the management team of BTS, announced on the time of BTS's military enlistment that "We hope for full group activities in 2025." However, in a recent conference call for the announcement of sales results, they expressed a cautions tone by saying that "We are still discussing for the 2026 activities."
The global fans, as well as industry professionals, are eagerly waiting for the return of BTS, who will be the full-fledged soldiers after a relatively long military service.
