ARMYs Defend RM Amid Criticism Over His New AI-Related Project
Over the years, technology that simulates human intelligence through computers—commonly known as AI—has made remarkable advancements and penetrated deeply into many areas of life. Among them, academia, entertainment, and art are three most prominent fields where AI has had a significant cultural and creative impact.
The development of AI has been well received by the public, but it has also raised a number of related issues, especially those concerning creativity and copyright. In particular, within these three fields, the line between violation and non-violation is very thin.
This has also become the source of recent debates among fans surrounding an AI project in which RM is said to be one of the investors. The project in question is Artue, an AI art curation service directly linket to ChatGPT, allowing users to converse and receive personalized artwork recommendations.
In an article titled "AI Curator Helps Korean Artists Expand Overseas," this AI art-related project is described as being developed by the startup Habitus Associate, co-founder by Song Bo-young and Sakong Hoon. It aims to connect Asian artists with the international market and digitize the art industry. Currently, the platform hosts over 3,700 artworks from more than 500 artists and is developing a resale feature to further facilitate transactions.
The seed funding round of approximate $3 million was supported by major investors such as 500 global (a Silicon Valley accelerator), Steve Chen (Co-founder of YouTube), and SBVA, RM, who is well-known as an art enthusiast, is als named as one of the angel visitors.
This mention quickly caught fans' attention, but some reacted negatively toward the project RM is involved in. These individuals argued that Artue could pose a major treat to artists and original artworks. In particular, they expressed anger over Artue's association with OpenAI and ChatGPT—tools that have previously been accused of idea theft and severe copyright violations.
They also pointed out that RM appeared to be contradicting his previously critical stance on AI, as he once wrote in "All Day." "Artificial intelligence needs to get lost! F*ck the algorithm!"
They further added that RM is known as a passionate art lover who frequently visits exhibitions and museums and owns many valuable artworks, yet he now supports an AI project with such potential risks. They left numerous comments criticizing the BTS leader for taking part in this project:
🗣 What's the guarantee they won't train AI on the art on the platform? Copyrights are a joke now? Can't believe that RM did this
🗣 All you need to do is follow the flow of money and everything starts making sense lol
🗣 Ok but literally what the hell... Namjoon who even are you anymore
🗣 He used to be??? He literally wrote a song about it??? It's all so confusing and I'm mad about it
🗣 Falling out of love with you fav artist hits different, man. I don't know what to say anymore at this point
🗣 Lately, they've been under my "disappointed, but not surprised" list. Mind you. I'd never thought I'd put them there but here we are. Making so-called "art" with AI, making friends with zionists, spending money everywhere but n things that really matter. What a disappointment.
However, the contrary to these negative reactions, the majority of fans believe that toxic individuals are simply trying to tear RM down amid recent controversies, including the the one surrounding BTS members' attendance at W Korea's disputed charity event. They argued that Artue is not a problematic project, nor is there any evidence that it violates copyrights or steals artistic ideas.
In fact, Artue has been recognized as an opportunity for emerging or lesser-known artists to gain exposure as clients search for artworks that match their preferences. One could imagine Artue as a sort of "Spotify and Netflix for art." Furthermore, the artist themselves have granted permission for their works to be displayed and sold on this digital platform, making its operation clearly transparent.
Fans also defended RM by emphasizing that he does not hold a bias against AI as a supportive tool for art, which is what Artue represents. The lyrics he wrote were a criticism of the misuse of AI—specifically when it dominates human creativity and expression. The phrase "f*ck the algorithm" was an artistic statement, and not a rejection of technology itself.
Moreover, in September of this year, RM shared a photo of himself celebrating his birthday with OpenAI executives at an informal event marking the launch of the company's Korean branch. This suggests that he is open to embracing technological progress.
Overall, the majority of fans fully support RM's AI-related art project and have come to his defense.
ARMYs comments:
👤 He's suffering! You don't care about his mental health! Stop harassing him!
👤 I think he sees as a way to make art more accessible, especially for small artists, beause it's a search engine that uses ChatGPT to find artwork—not generative AI.
👤 He is not your friend, and you're not an ARMY! F*ck off!
👤 Are you his mama or daddy? Does he have to report to you? You didn't even bother to learn how it actually works! You're just focused on harassing him.
👤 I read the whole article. This is a lovely plan to make real art accessible to more people. He would never do anything harmful to art or humanity.
👤 This is actually interesting. I want to know more about it. I don't like the chat aspect, but I think people are really jumping the gun here.
👤 Everyone's jumping to conclusions without even understanding what the project is about. Unless there's actual proof that Artue is misusing artists' works, there's no reason to attack RM for supporting innovation in art.
👤 People need to stop panicking every time the word "AI" shows up. Not all AI projects are harmful—some are designed to help artists, not replace them. Let's wait for real evidence before dragging someone's name through the mud.
👤 RM has always supported art and creativity. If he chose to invest, he must have believed in its positive purpose. Don't blame him just because you never liked him in the first place.
