BTS to Announce Comeback at Gwanghangmun and Gyeongbokgung... Filming and Venue Use Approved

Cultural Heritage Committee gives additional approval... Attention for the meeting of K-pop and national heritage
Performance planned at Gwanghangmun Square on March 21... Seoul City to decide as early as this week

The group BTS, returning as a "complete lineup" after 3 years and 9 months, will announce their comeback in the Gwanghwangmun area of Seoul.

According to the Korea Heritage Service on the 20th, the Cultural Heritage Committee reviewed HYBE's application for permission to use and film at Gyeongbokgung Palace and Sungnyemun Gate and granted conditional approval during a meeting held that afternoon.

The Korea Heritage Service specified the condition that a subcommittee will be formed in the future to examine the detailed plans submitted by HYBE, including their potential impact on cultural heritage.

As a result, BTS will be able to film preliminary videos for their comeback stage at Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwangmun. Filming is expected to take place in consideration of Gyeongbokgung's regular closure days (every Tuesday).

According to the application, events featuring nighttime media façade displays (a technique that projects images using LED lightning) may also be held along the Gwanghwangmun wall and the fortress of Sungnyemun.

These filming activities and media events are intended as a "signal flare" announcing BTS's comeback.

BTS is set to meet fans on March 20 with their fifth full-length album, "Arirang." The new release comes 3 years and 9 months after their anthology album "Proof," released in June 2022.

Recently, the agency submitted an application to the Seoul Metropolitan Government to use Gwanghwangmun Square, and separately requested permission from the Korea Heritage Service to use and film at Gyeongbokgung, Gwanghwangmun, and the Sungnyemun area.

The performance is being considered for March 20, the day of the comeback, as well as the weekend of March 21-22.

According to Seoul City and other sources, HYBE expressed its intention to hold a concert for approximately 18,000 people on Saturday, March 21, at Gwanghwangmun Square when submitting the application. It is also reportedly applied to hold an event for around 30,000 people at Seoul Plaza.

This would be the first time a solo concert by a specific singer or group is held at Gwanghwangmun Square.

In the past, multiple artists have performer there as part of major cultural events, but permission has never been granted for a solo act.

Attention is focused on whether this concert, to be held at one of Seoul's landmark locations, will serve as an opportunity to promote Korea to the world.

In application materials submitted to the Korea Heritage Service, HYBE stated that the event will be live-streamed via global OTT platform to 300 million subscribers across 190 countries.

The company added that it could become "a global live broadcast event on a scale similar to the World Cup of the Olympics," nothing that more than 50 millions viewers would be exposed to K-heritage and K-culture.

Approval for the use of the square and whether the concert will take place is expected to be decided as early as this week, or by next week at the latest.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to hold an advisory Committee review soon to determine whether to grant permission for the concert. Approval will depend on the submission of a safety management plan to prevent accidents caused by large crowd.
