HYBE Issues "Warning" Over Spread of Fake News About BTS... "Claims of Streaming Plunge Are Groundless"

HYBE is currently struggling with the spread of malicious fake news targeting its affiliated idol group, BTS.

According to the entertainment industry on the 3rd, an image of unknown origin containing streaming data for "SWIM," the title track of BTS's 5th full-length album ARIRANG, rapidly spread across social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter).

The image claimed that, as of the 1st, "Swim" had recorded 5,198 daily streams on Spotify—representing a drop of over 10 million streams compared to the previous day, or a 99.95% decrease. These figures spread beyond social media to stock discussion forums on portal sites, raising concerns among some investors about potential impacts on the company's stock price.

However, the data was confirmed to be false. HYBE stated, "The image in question is not based on official aggregated data, and the figures themselves are unrealistic," adding, "After directly confirming with Spotify, we verified that it is not real data."

The fake news surrounding BTS is not limited to manipulated figures. Recently, baseless rumors about member Jin's body proportions have also been circulating in online communities. Some have claimed that the company manipulated images simply because he appeared shorter in certain photos. However, experts explain that body proportions can appear different depending on factors such as camera lens angle, pose, and distance from surrounding people.

Some analysts suggest that these incidents my be attempts to exploit BTS's global influence to create market confusion. There is also speculation about the possibility of coordinated attacks on the artist, commonly referred to as "reverse viral" tactics.

In particular, fake news that distorts performance-related metrics such as streaming numbers is raising concerns, as it can mislead not only fans but also investors.

A HYBE representative stated, "The distribution of unverified false information related to our artists goes beyond defamation and can cause serious damage to our overall business," adding, "We are continuously monitoring the spread of fake news and are reviewing strict legal action against those responsible, with leniency."
