Could BTS's Economic Impact Surpass Taylor Swift?
Mexico concerts alone estimated to generate US$105 million
World tour revenue could reach US$ 1.8 billion
K-pop group BTS is estimated to have generated roughly 150 billion won (about US$105 million) in economic impact from its concerts in Mexico alone. There is also growing speculation that the group's ongoing world tour, which runs through March next year, could create a global economic ripple effect comparable to pop superstar Taylor Swift's so-called "Taylornomics."
According to BigHit Music on May 10, BTS wrapped up a three-show run in Mexico City on May 7 (local time). The agency said the concerts are expected to generate approximately US$107.5 million (around 150.5 billion won) in economic impact.
BTS is currently on its ARIRANG world tour, which includes 85 performances across 34 cities worldwide. The tour began last month in Goyang and will continue through the United States and Mexico before heading to major European countries including Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. In the second half of the year, the group will return to North America for additional shows in the U.S. and Canada, followed by performances in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Industry observers believe the tour's impact will extend far beyond ticket sales, boosting sectors such as tourism and hospitality and creating substantial economic spillover effects. In a report published last month, Reuters cited projections from IBK Investment & Securities estimating that the tour could generate as much as 2.7 trillion won (approximately US$1.8 billion) in revenue.
Reuters also noted that some analysts believe the tour's earnings could rival or even surpass the highest-grossing tours in history, including Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour and Coldplay's Music of the Spheres World Tour.
